about
“Lockdown” had its debut in a very early version, in one of the live stream shows, and it was only few days after it was written, cheat sheet at hand and everything. Never had we performed a new song live at such an early stage.
It is no coincidence that the title of this EP, “At The Edge of Life”, comes from the lyrics of “Lockdown”. There were times when we were really worried about our safety. Whatever your beliefs, the pandemic has revealed, or exposed, rather, some aspects of ourselves, and aspects of our fellow humans. This is the song that most reflects our state of mind during those times, and to this date we have only performed it in a few live streams from our studio.
The perfect match for this song could only be Peter Bugg Rizzo, whom we met when we played at Whitby Goth Weekend. He was performing with the legendary Gene Loves Jezebel, and with Ugly Buggs. Both acts felt enthralling, spellbinding, to us. We also had some nice conversation with Peter, between sets.
We had the Ugly Buggs album Peter gave us on rotation for a while, with a special memory of the music blasting as our soundtrack while driving our rental car up and down the steep North York moors in the fog. You should try, safely, of course.
We have kept in touch with Peter through the years, which resulted in one show in Italy where we opened for GLJ, as well. Extremely talented and absolutely down to earth, we often wondered if we could ever work with Mr Rizzo. We asked. Dream come true! His perfect touch added the right balance between introspection and groove to our song.
Peter's photo is from his solo page here on Bandcamp. Please notice that all proceeds from his Bandcamp page will be donated to the Rosa Fund. The Rosa Fund is a charity that supports women’s and girls’ organisations, including the Reclaim These Streets movement.
lyrics
LOCKDOWN, EUKARYOTIC, CONJUNCTION, RING
PRIMITIVE SPIRIT AND MATTER
FUTURE HISTORY BOOKS
WILL TELL THE STORY OF THOSE SELFISH WAYS
FEEDING THOSE EGOS
WHAT WILL, WHAT WILL PREVAIL, BETWEEN
THAT GOOD AND EVIL, INVISIBLE DROPS,
THE ENEMY IN THE BREATH OF THE OTHER
BUT IT COULD BE MINE
HOSTING THIS PARASITE, REPLICATING INSIDE
AT THE EDGE OF LIFE, INVISIBLE DROPS
THE ENEMY IN THE BREATH OF THE OTHER
NO MATTER HOW LOVED, NO MATTER HOW LOST
AT THE EDGE OF LIFE
DON'T LET IT BE IN VAIN
FAILURE WON'T DEFINE ANY OF US
AS LONG AS WE CAN LEARN
OUR FLEETING TIME ON EARTH
OUR EXISTENCE OUR GREAT WORK OF ART
WHAT MATTERS IS LOVE
THAT WILL NEVER BE LOST
AT THE EDGE OF LIFE
LOCKDOWN, HOSTILE TO EACH OTHER
OR LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER
DON'T LET, DON'T LET GREED
TAKE OVER YOUR SOUL
YOUR ENEMY IN THEIR TEARS
REPLICATING ALL AROUND
AT THE EDGE OF LIFE, INVISIBLE DROPS
SUSPICION, IN THE BREATH OF THE OTHER
BUT IT COULD BE YOURS
BUT IT COULD BE A LOVED ONE
AT THE EDGE OF LIFE, AT THE EDGE OF LIFE

I've enjoyed The Wake since the 90s. The new album feels like a trip to right where they left off! Goth Rock at it's best! I can't wait to see where they go from here!! aklosowski22

Cinematic-scale goth from Reflection Black with catchy melodies, dreamy synths, punchy rhythms, and a sense of timelessness. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 21, 2023

This is the kind of gothic rock I absolutely love. Oldschool, guitar-heavy music in the vein of Love Like Blood. I'm really hoping for a full-length LP. WotanAK
